DETROIT ARTS NEWS GROUP
Breaking
News. Mary Rose Maniscalco was born on July 14, 7
am. For
more info.
Let
me begin this, my final installment of DANG,
with a huge thankyou
to so many of
you who put your money where your mouths were recently
and sent in a contribution to WTVS, Channel 56, in
support of ART BEAT.
So far they have recieved over $400 from DANG members,
not including the membership contributions many of
you have earmarked for ART
BEAT over the past 2 years. The word from
the station is, while this amount is nothing to sneeze
at, it is short of the $20,000 needed to underwrite
another season. A number of you justifyably expressed
concern over this contingency. The good news: WTVS
will produce one final special installment
of ART BEAT, applying
the $400 + toward production costs. The bad news:
unless a major underwriter steps forward within the
next couple weeks, ART BEAT,
as an ongoing series, will become part of Detroit
history. Meanwhile, I want to thank each and every
one you who contributed with special thanks to
Victor
Pytko, who lead this valient, grass roots
effort. It is a powerful indicator of what is possible
when arts people get together.
Next,
it is with great pleasure that I introduce the new
editor of DANG. I'm very excited to be turning over
the reigns to Kim Dabbs, the owner of the new Ambient
Gallery in Grosse Pointe. She has been (and
will continue to be) with ARTSERVE Michigan (she produces
the Michigan Artist Directory) for many years; I am
looking forward to her excellent stewardship and the
new directions she will take both DANG and the new
gallery. Read about
Kim & Steve Dabbs and the new Ambient Gallery.
I will continue sending a Maniscalco Gallery
newsletter, but less frequently. I invite and encourage
each of you to remain on both lists as each will provide
valuable information.
I am beginning a lively FORUM
& BLOG as well, for those who want to
follow and participate in the mad ramblings of yours
truly.
With
regard to both Art Beat and DANG, allow me to take
this opportunity to sincerely thank you for allowing
me into your circle of attention. With all the noise
out there, I realize how selective we all must be
in allowing others into that special place of trust.
Thank you for opening your hearts to me. I think of
this important work as a part of the larger battle
being waged against the corporate onslot.
This
week in DANG: 4731 comes out in the sun . . . summer
sessions sizzle . . . warming up to a feminine perspective
. . . Visual Jam sessions catch fire . . . why settle
for the usual fare when Detroit has lots of truly
inspiring (and hot) things to do.

ARTS ADVOCACY and
Arts Opportunities:
I am happy to report
that the American Heritage Act, which will make it
possible once again for artists to recieve a fair
market value deduction for donated works, is back
on the legislative docket. Currently artists can deduct
only the cost of materials. The current bills have
been reintroduced in both the House and the Senate
and we once again need your help to enlist cosponsors
for both bills. I hope we can count on you to contact
your Congressman/Senator. Your past efforts have been
invaluable to the process. CONGRESSIONAL BILL NUMBERS:
HOUSE BILL H.R. 1120 "ARTISTS' CONTRIBUTION TO
AMERICAN HERITAGE ACT" Introduced by Congressmen
Jim Ramstad (R-MN) and Ben Cardin (D-MD). SENATE BILL
S. 372 "ARTIST-MUSEUM PARTNERSHIP ACT" Introduced
by Senators Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Robert Bennett
(R-UT). If you do not know your legislators' name
go to http://thomas.loc.gov/
at the top of the page is a link to House and Senate
(it's real easy). Below is a sample letter: I urge
you to become a cosponsor of [insert House or Senate
bill number and name], which would allow artists to
deduct fair-market value for self-generated works
donated to a non-profit institution. Passage of this
legislation would enable museums, libraries and archives
to solicit original works from artists, writers and
composers who are both regional and national and help
us strengthen the collections in [name your community
or institution]. Currently, an artist, writer or composer
can only deduct the cost of materials to create the
work, which is not a large incentive to donate, particularly
since the majority of artists, writers and composers
in this country earn very little. Since the law allowing
artists to deduct the fair-market value of self-generated
works to a museum or library was repealed in 1969
there has been a dramatic decline in the number of
such gifts offered to institutions. Many national
and important regional artists, writers and composers
sell their original works to private collectors or
abroad, which effectively keeps them from ever being
seen by the American public. We are, in essence, deprived
of part of our cultural and artistic heritage.I look
forward to hearing that you have become a cosponsor
of this most important cultural legislation.

AIR DATE: 7-16-05 Because the creation of
monumental artwork depends on monumental vision,

it is the truth of the common man.

If you happen to live
in the Grosse Pointe/Harper Woods area, don't forget
to watch "Inside
Art," on WMTV-5 where we "turn your
world inside art," 1:30 pm, 10:30 pm and 4:30
am, seven days a week. If you know of an arts related
story or event or person that should be featured on
this popular cable opportunity let me know (I am still
producing these when I come to Detroit, which is very
often).

As always, I appreciate
your feedback
- keep it coming. Thanks to so many of you who've
shared with me about the experiences you've had attending
events and opportunities listed in DANG.
The DANG mission is
to excavate some of the most inspiring treasures from
the "underground" arts scene in and around
Detroit and provide %CUST% %CUST% (and about 8,500
other arts people) an alternative to the mundane offerings
of the corporate commercial onslot. DANG has been
sponsored by the Maniscalco Gallery.
Let
me know if you think this cooperative promotional
model is too commercial or "self-promoting."
I'd like to know how you think DANG might be better
utilized to help make Detroit and SE Michigan a "cooler"
place to live and work. There are a lot of "cool"
developments going on right now, particularly downtown;
its pretty amazing the transformation that is taking
place. The cultural community is mobilizing for action.
The question is: what are we as a community really
willing to do to put Detroit on a par with Chicago
or Boston?
To submit info for
links, listings for future DANG emails, please contact
Robert;
include a website with up-to-date information, preferably
ready to cut & paste. Any reprinting of Pointe
of Art or "DANG" for any commercial
purpose must be done with the approval of the author.
As always, please feel free to forward Pointe
of Art to your personal list. And, dont
forget to keep in touch with the ones you love!
