Butterflies 16 x 20″ oil on linen, framed by the artist

The original has found her forever home. Available as hand embellished canvas gicle and AP giclee on heavy paper

Featured in Chromo Sapient, a book of poetry and art

My daughter Mary and I decided to take a Saturday afternoon bike tour of downtown Charleston on our tandem. It was a beautiful, cool sunny day. Mary was getting tired of my stopping every few minutes to snap a photo (I brake for beauty), so we stopped at a real Fine Art gallery to take in the magnificent collection of work. While in the gallery, Mary spotted a pretty girl in a cute yellow jumpsuit. She said, “she’s so beautiful. Ask her if you can paint her picture.” So, I did. I moved this young lady around the gallery, into this light or that, until I got just the right glow. Her name is Julietta, Julietta was so kind and flattered I might paint her. When I showed her the painting and she said, “awesome. I’m in love with the Butterflies!” Hence the title. I was struck by her clear, untroubled innocence. After all, “butterflies are free.” And that is what I wanted to capture.
