Butterflies came about when my daughter, Mary and I, decided to take a Saturday afternoon bike tour of downtown Charleston on our tandem. It was a beautiful, cool sunny day. Mary was getting tired of my stopping every few minutes to snap a photo (I brake for beauty), so we stopped at the Reinert Fine Art gallery to take in the magnificent OPA National show. While in the gallery, Mary spotted a pretty girl in a white jumpsuit. She said, “she’s so beautiful. Ask her if you can take her picture.” So I did. I moved this young lady around, her name is Julietta, to pickup some of the gallery lighting. Julietta was so kind and flattered I might paint her. I showed her the painting and she said, “awesome. I’m in love with the Butterflies,” hence the title. I was struck by her clear, untroubled innocence. After all, “butterflies are free.” That is what I set out to capture.
continued . . .
I love this frame for the painting.
