Still Life with Orange, Avocado and Rose 11″ x 14″ oil on linen, framed by the artist
Still Life with Orange, Avocado and Rose was a fun demo for my students. My goal was to get into the mind of Van Gogh with this one, really breaking each form down into a sculptural mosaic. The reflections tell the story of what is happening from the perspective of the viewer. Part of my research and preparation for the next transmogrification of my play, Vincent John Doe. My expressive realist style lends itself to the style of Van Gogh. Another way to think of the work is precise abstraction, which at first sounds like an oxymoron. For me, the art of painting is to eloquently distill forms into abstract forms which lead to a deeper understanding of nature.
