The Angel Oak
The Process of Painting the Angel Oak This is my largest work on stretched linen canvas. The painting is 5' x 7.' Yes, that's right, I said FIVE feet! It was commissioned by our neighbor/friends Amy and Justin Couch, who needed a large piece as a focal point with...
Portrait of Bill Brusilow
Portraits don't always have to take themselves too seriously Everyone knows I love portraiture, that I love to study the human form and look deeply into my subjects. The process is compelling and there is no end to the what there is to learn about the subject. I have...
Freedom and Quarantining
Get into freedom We talk a lot about freedom in this country. We think of freedom in terms of getting away from something that binds us. But freedom isn’t getting out of something, like prison or “work.” We often confuse escape with freedom. Real Freedom gets us into...
Justin Time
We had a wonderful Holiday Party / Portrait Demonstration last evening at the Summerville Art Guild. Justin, my awesome neighbor agreed to pose and I think it came out rather well. I love it when my work is so appreciated. And I really enjoy painting from life with a...
Seeing as an Artist
"Who am I anyway? Am I my resume?" from A Chorus Line What is in our identity that makes us who we are? What is it in a person's face, that if we capture it, we call it a likeness? People boast, "I never forget a face." What is it in a face that is so...
Hired Gun
Many know me mostly for my commission portraits. Does that make me a hired gun? Before I dig into that, here's a gentle reminder that I am free to paint whatever strikes my fancy, including commission portraits! Nonetheless, I invite you to take a short journey of my...
Selling ART in ALT Spaces
I'm not a big fan of showing art in alternative spaces, such as restaurants or bars. The main reason is that there rarely is a staff focused/trained on/in selling art. It is usually an after thought. They are there to sell food and/or drinks. But sometimes, rarely, it...
Time Space and VJD
Young Angel tries to reach across time to reassure her older self that she is whole and complete. If visual art is a response to space and music a response to time, then theatre and film are a response to time and space. My goal with #VincentJohnDoe was to respond to...

Speed Painting
I must be a crazy artist. I enjoy painting on a time crunch. And I enjoy painting for an audience. Somehow it triggers the actor in me. And by actor, I mean one who takes action. I love the spontaneity of being in action. It challenges me to make important decisions...
Maniscalco Gallery on Facebook
I did another corporate sketch gig on napkins at the historic Gadston House, here in Charleston. The idea of using napkins came from when I played Picasso at a party at the Gibbes Museum a few years ago and just spontaneously started drawing people on napkins, like he so famously did. People at the party loved it.
Quick fact: my novel, The Fishfly begins with a similar story.

I went in pretty deep for these sketches. I try to capture the soul of the individual in my portraits, even in a quick sketch.

That's why certain aboriginal tribes and spiritual practices don't allow portraiture. They believe the soul can be stolen. Don't worry, it's in my contract: I promise I won't steal your soul!
