Peach Floral 8″ x 10″ oil on panel, framed by the artist
Peach Floral is a more subdued, quieter still life than my more recent indulgences. I went for a more Vermeer style, more realistic, but still quite painterly. The vase is a signature Pewabic finish. I tried to capture the iridescence, for which Pewabic ceramics are famous. I invite the viewer to feel the surfaces of the objects with their eyes.

Here be a variety of substances, each responding to the light in its own way. I like the shiny things like vases and ornaments against the flat things, which absorb the light, like flowers and bricks. This is a very compact composition. How the complicated variety of objects connect and blend into one another fascinates me. A Still life is interesting because of what goes in and what goes out. The combination of items included can make us think. Sometimes it makes us feel. The rest is a delicious romp of color and the thrill of pushing paint.
