I used to think old people were exotic, until it dawned on me that I was slowly becoming old myself. Now when I paint an elderly person it is a silent protest against ageism. The International Longshoremen’s Association is the largest Union of Maritime Workers in North America. Their work is grueling. It makes or breaks you. But this man is neither broken nor unbowed. So, look beneath his wrinkles. Focus on his character. Look underneath his skin. His bones are hardened by experience; his integrity hardened by steel. He is a man of few words, but he will always have your back. His gaze is as sharp as his mind. Age has only made him stronger, more determined, yet we see inside he’s very kind. Do you see it too? He does not suffer fools. And yet he’s filled with love for you and those who mean the world to him.

He is your grandfather, your brother, your child and your friend, all familiar jewels. To be inside his mind would be your greatest honor. So here's you chance. He wears all tis and more with grace, an epic marathoner, all somehow contained in the magnificent topography of his supple, pulsing face. I took the reference photo about ten years ago. I don't remember where I was or what his name. But I've been haunted by his image ever since. I don't know why it took so long to paint this portrait.
