Barn at Dusk
$150.00 – $1,250.00
Barn at Dusk 18/x 24″ original oil on panel, framed by the artist.
My father, Joe Maniscalco, had a deep fascination with barns. He never met one he didn’t stop to photograph. He painted many barn pictures throughout his career. This painting is a homage to the master barn painter. This particular barn was just off US 23 in Lockbourne, Ohio. But it could be anywhere in the Midwest. I enjoyed the two striking cupola structures above and the piece of sky coming through from the other side. There is something lonely, yet reassuring about a barn standing strong, solitary, in a field, this one freshly tilled. Is this barn, though weathered, still in use?
Continued . . .
The barns dotting America's countryside are shrines to hard work and commitment to the land. I enjoy painting those with plenty of wear, perhaps abandoned. This one has seen better days, its awning crumbling. The silo is missing it's roof. But there is enough still standing for me to imagine all the work done, long ago, over many years, by strong, steady hands. I can almost picture the farmer, tired from a long day's work. Rest now, gentle soul. Great barns never die, they just fade away.
