I love charcoal drawing. Doing more of them is my new year present to myself. I enjoy going into my subjects deeply. This drawing explores not only the textures and topography of the face, I hope it also gets into the personality and story beneath the surface.

John is Watching came about as a result of a live demo, where I created this drawing step by step, from the beginning. The more deeply I looked into his eyes, the more I saw God.
"Draw along with Robert as he takes you step by step in the portrait drawing process. He gets into gesture, proportions, envelope, massing in, linear relationships (finding connections) and technique issues like using the eraser as an expressive tool, stippling, hatching. He also gets into some great drawing hacks, like how to draw an eye, a wrinkle, hair and capturing a variety of textures and effects using charcoal."
