Man from Indonesia 11 x 14″ oil on canvas panel, after a photograph taken by Francisco Galeazzi

Man from Indonesia was created for the upcoming Mite Benefit in November. Abigail and the Mite team met this man through their largest project partnership ever. On April 4, 2021, Cyclone Seroja hit the island communities of Indonesia hard. Because of the lack of protective infrastructure, the storm tore apart homes and killed more than a hundred people. A longtime partner, TMC Indonesia, reached out to us for Phase 1 support, helping provide basic needs like food and water to the people of Timor Island. Once that first phase was complete, they came back with a bigger request: would our Giving Community help build new homes for families whose houses had been washed away and whose lives had been upended?

Of course, Mite said yes. Over the next two years, they launched eight projects across eleven villages. Ninety families who had spent months living in makeshift huts with neighbors finally had a place to call home again. A home to host in, to relax in, and to return to after a long day of hard work. For these families, it was also a source of pride and belonging.

When the Mite team visited these villages, they were met with singing and dancing. Mothers opened their arms and began crying with joy and gratitude for their new homes. Families would ask them to come sit with them and share a meal, or even just coconut water.

This man was in one of the villages they visited. His happiness and countenance in the face of such a turbulent time inspired Mite's videographer, Francisco Galeazziso, who took the photo I used for this painting, with his blessing, of course.

The Man from Indonesia reassures us and connects us across continents. I want the viewer to know we are all the same, we all share the same sorrows, the same desires and the same joy. We may have different names, faces and places but we are all connected by a loving God, who hears our prayers. We are called to action, not just prayer, to help those in need, in faraway lands and in our own backyard. My hope is this painting inspires the viewer with awe and a sense of connection. Because he is us.
