Ncheta Island Bathers depicts the people of the Bangweulu Wetlands of Zambia, the recipients of Mite’s Project 61: Farmland for Souls, where our donors’ helped families on Ncheta Island learn to grow gardens that feed their households and provide a livable income.
Here the children bathe and enjoy themselves. This painting is derived from several photos taken by Francisco María Galeazzi, with special permission and thanks.

Behind the metal boat, there is sunken mokoro, a canoe carved from the trunk of an African Sausage tree, Ncheta Island Bathers is part of a series of paintings I am doing around Project 61. They will be auctioned at Mite's upcoming Gala.
I am very excited about my collaboration with Mite, which has such a wonderful mission. I feel blessed to be part of its mission which raises awareness and funding for worthwhile projects across the globe. This image is part of Project 61. I consider Ncheta Island Bathers a continuation of The Quench Project, which began for me in Haiti and has evolved to encompass Flint, Michigan the Lowcountry near Charleston and now Zambia. Quench is about our relationship with water and highlights the wonderful work being done to bring fresh water and farming technology to remote areas. It is also about spiritual desire and what it means to quench our need for meaning, our connection with God and with each other. The living waters image from the Bible comes to mind.
All profits from the sales of the original and reproductions of Ncheta Island Bathers will benefit Mite.
