See the Light began as a demo on the international Artschool Live with Eric Rhodes on 1/1/25. See the light is a continuation of my love affair with light, with all its levels of meaning, part of The Quench Project. Is the light in his eye placed there by God or is it merely a reflection of the light around him? What is this beautiful soul looking at? What is the spark in man that we can see with our eyes and feel in our heart? My subject, Ervin McDaniel, is a member of the Charleston Artist Guild, and was very gracious about letting me paint him. My wonderful subject also won second place in photography in the CAG show for his moving photo, “This Song is for You.” I like the symmetry of that.

See the Light by Robert Maniscalco

See the light has a universality to it. We recognize the emotion immediately and let our imaginations take over. The image I used as reference was taken in an art gallery. We might notice multiple light sources sparkling upon his face. This creates the shimmering effect of his lustrous face, which seems to glow. This is probably the most difficult light effect to pull off well. I rose to the challenge and am keeping with my dedication to light and illumination, in all its various metaphorical levels. I want the viewer to feel the shimmering light and imagine the life story behind the eyes and the positive intentions of the subject, who is seeing the light and inspiring the viewer to also see the light.

A man who has lived life and all of its challenges and shines a demeanor of light, peace, love and acceptance of self that allows him to accept others and be light, fun, full of smiles…contagious!

See the Light is one of my favorite faces of yours. He’s one of the most “alive”. On a couple of different levels.
