Continued . . .
This painting is of a young woman, vulnerable, gazing outward toward the unknown. Is she a damsel in distress? I think not. She wants and needs nothing but her freedom. She is one with her environment, safe amidst the vast openness and foreboding of the seashore.
This painting is inspired by a recent trip with the family to Capers Island, where the haunting Boneyard beach calls out; it is a hotbed of inspiration. The young lady is my wife, Cate, who became transfixed by the waves and the beautiful monuments, trees long captured by the sea, representing the inevitable march of time. They are Old and she is young. Yet both remain timeless.
The sky is dripping or melting. Transcendental Dreaming is the result of allowing my under painting to speak to me. As I roughed in the sky, it started dripping. I just let it do its thing, enjoying the way it interacted with the rest of the picture. Painting is always a dialogue for me. I have painted many a conventional sky. Why not let the sky just be what it wants to be? Allowing the painting to speak, to tell me what is next, is a very important component of my work.
The "stump" on which the young lady sits is glowing in a multitude of pixelated colors - a small homage to impressionism. The young lady's red dress dominates the image, calling us like a Siren, to our own enlightenment. And finally, the lines formed by nature, seem mostly to be pointing toward the figure's center, as if they are infusing life and vitality into her.
