I really enjoyed painting this beautiful soul. He is derived from a photo taken by Salemwitch on Deviantart.com, with permission. I don’t know a lot about this man, but for me, the painting was a meditation on the resiliency and bravery of the Ukrainian people, who now find themselves fighting for their country against an evil oppressor. This man is defiant. He is determined to resist with everything in him. This is existential battle pitting a Ukrainian “David” against a vicious “Goliath.” He is one of many, an indominable people with a rich culture.

We have been indoctrinated to refer to a hard working, weathered people as "peasants." We think of it as derogatory and yet history books commonly refer to hard working, Ukrainians or Russians as "peasants," because classism and ageism serve the narrative of the oppressor. We are now all Ukrainian patriots. We remain steadfast in our solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
