When you have something important to say, maybe a bit out of your wheelhouse, but not really, because what you’re talking about affects all of us, you better go ahead and say it. If we don’t wake up to the truth of what is happening in Washington, there won’t be any more Dave Matthews concerts or your daughters’ recitals, or local art competitions, or public schools, or parks or beaches, or neighbors. Or anything.

When I say this is an existential crisis I’m not talking about philosophical angst. I’m talking about an end to everything. If this unstable genius crosses the wrong line in his blundering, if we don’t mitigate climate change, if we don’t stop this fascist coop by the Heritage Foundation and Project 2025, if we don’t get our diplomacy just right because of Trump’s seedy relationship with Putin, there won’t be any pieces left to put back together when Trump is done; there will be nowhere left to run.

And if you think I’m overstating the situation, you need to think about what putting that much power in the hands of one man, any man, means. But this guy in particular. He’s a mean person. He’s not a nice guy. He makes no pretense that he is. Unlike the common authoritarians that come and go in the world, he is running the most powerful country the world has ever known. And he’s hiding for dear life the proof that he rapped little girls. And his MAGA followers DON’T CARE. They think I’m crazy. They aren’t the least bit curious about whether the man who holds the keys to our entire future is capable of such heinous crimes, the ones he has been convicted of and the ones of which he has been accused.

Imagine for a moment if he is such a man, a child rapist, projecting all that power, with all that vengeance and hatred pouring out in every choice he makes, with the most powerful army in the world in his hands. Where will that leave us? If we don’t remove him now, while we still have legal means to do so (impeachment, the 25th amendment), how will we stop him? We won’t. Every day, he is consolidating his power, replacing the entire Federal bureaucracy with loyalists, Gerrymandering, attacking voting rights, privatizing Executive branch departments and institutions, usurping legislative authorities, quashing due process, militarizing our cities, mass deportations, defying court orders, rewriting history and culture to fit his white supremacist narrative, attacking free speech, weaponizing the justice department to go after his enemies. He will at some point soon become unstoppable. Then we will see a side of him we heretofore have not seen, with no restraints or guardrails, that will make his current dark foreboding seem almost quaint by comparison.

Read the writing on the wall, people. You may ask “what can I do about it?” And the answer is nothing. But there is something WE can do right now. We are not helpless. We must protest in such numbers that the government will have to listen to us. It’s the only way. It’s time to get real, folks. This isn’t going away by itself.
