Zofia is a pretty Russian girl. I originally thought this was a Ukranian girl, or even Polish. But based on the garb, she is Russian. It is derived from a personal photo one of my students brought in. Either way, we wonder what she might be thinking. I wanted to capture an air of innocence, a feeling of dignity and hope for a brighter future. The smile is ambiguous and alluring. And so is the cat’s.This painting depicts a Russian wedding ritual, the beginnings of love and belonging.
