Beacon of Hope 24×24″ oil on panel

The original has found its forever home. Available as giclee.

Beacon of Hope seems to be another nice painting of a row boat. But as one looks further into the painting, a dark truth emerges. One World Trade Center peaks above the water, with the Empire State and Chrysler buildings in the distance. We are looking at Manhattan Island in an alternative reality. Beacon of Hope explores a possible future if we do not address climate change. Climate change is an existential threat. My hope it that this painting contributes to the necessary conversation about our responsibility in this crucial moment. The title is somewhat of an oxymoron. The message is clear: there is always hope, even after all life has been wiped out and our species and culture have vanished. The planet will go on. The planet is the life force of our world, not us. God appointed humans to be caretakers of His great planet. That is what He meant by “dominion.” As a Christian, I believe climate change is a test of the depth of our commitment, as a species, to the protection of our one world. I do not believe in this dystopian vision. It is my sincere hope that we use this challenge as an opportunity to remake our relationship to this planet.

What seems at first to be a lazy rowboat floating on a pond, reveals the city of New York, beneath the water.

Beacon of Hope explores a possible future if we do not address climate change, the existential threat of our generation. My hope is that this painting contributes to the important conversation about our responsibility in this crucial moment. The title is a bit of an oxymoron. The message is clear: there is always hope, even after all life has been wiped out and our species and culture have vanished. The planet will go on. Earth is the life force of our world, not us. God appointed humans to be caretakers of this magnificent planet. That is what He meant by "dominion." As a Christian, I believe climate change is a test of the depth of our commitment, as a species, to the protection of our one world. I do not believe this dystopian nightmare will become a reality, even as many blithly are doing nothing to stop it. And yet, there is always hope. It is my sincere belief we will rise to the challenge and recognize it as an opportunity to remake our relationship with the planet we call home.
