This is NETI’s second “space portrait.” Goddess of the Universe was the first (and is sold). Neti is thinking of a continuing the series. His description below leaves out some crucial background. The Christmas Nebulae is featured in the background, with several modifications, namely, the addition of numerous eyes, stars and galaxies. Thematically, in addition to the pain of effort and age, it is my hope you also might feel the joy, determination and discipline of the surviving spirit. The man in the painting is based on a photograph I’ve had floating around my studio for years. In the photo, he has a large gourd on his shoulders. The “Atlas Shrugged” reference never rose to the level of inspiration for me or Neti. Although, if the viewer would like to draw from this painting the idea that Atlas is old and tired of holding the world together, he won’t mind. My take is that no matter how old or tired he may get, he will always be true to his task. Release the political Grackens. The very detailed and deep portrayal of the man is a direct influence of my father, Joseph Maniscalco. This face reminds me of the tender, sensitive portraits he made over the years as well as the weathered Cowboys in his western series. Makes me wish I were actually Neti.
Alternate title: Where No Old Man Has Gone Before
Wisdom of the Ages answers the two most important questions mankind faces. Are we alone and is some old guy running the show? This painting is proof the answer is “yes.” There are at least thirty eyes hidden in the painting. And, as everyone knows, eyes are the window to the soul. In addition, one may observe city lights emanating from the Earth, further proving there is indeed somebody home. Therefore, the universe is not merely a formless abyss of nothingness, but a pulsing, living force. Each entity in existence, in it’s own way, is calling out with an impassioned, “I am here. I am. I.”
